Beam and Types of Beams

Beam- Definition and Types Of Beams:

Beam:

A Beam is a long Structural element supported or fixed with hinged and rollers at different supporting points on the beam. Most of the beams are used in the construction industry especially in bridges to carry heavy loads and subjected to shear and bending stress. beams made from steel or iron are in T or H shape but in concrete construction long horizontal beams are produced, beams used to carry heavy vertical loads with the help of different support points especially they are high resistance to bending stress and shear force.

Types of Beams are divided according to the support point.

Types of Beams:

The Following are the Different types of beams

  •  Simply Supported Beam
  •  Fixed Beam
  •  Continuous Beam
  •  Cantilever Beam
  •  Over hanging Beam
  •  Steel Beam

Simply Supported Beam:

When a Beam is supported on both the ends as shown in figure it is known as a simply supported beam. In this type of beam, only the endpoints are supported with hinged and roller and the beam subjected to bending stress when a load is applied on it.

Fixed Beam:

In this type of Beams, both the ends of the beam is fixed as shown in the figure, then it is called a fixed beam. In this type of beams, it subjected to shear stress when a load is applied to it.

Continuous Beam:

When the beam contains more than two support points then it is said to be a continuous beam. In this type of beams, it subjected to low bending moment due to more number of supports.

Cantilever beam:

In this type of beams, it is supported with only one fixed point at one end of the beam as shown in figure then it is known as Cantilever Beam.

Over Hanging Beam:

In this type of beams, it has two or more than two support points on the beam. and one end of the beam is free as shown in the figure.

Steel Beams:

This type of beams is constructed in metal bridges or huge buildings.

There are different shapes in steel beams like T, H, L, etc.
