Difference between Wet and Dry Sump Lubrication System - Mechanical Education

Difference between Wet Sump Lubrication System and Dry Sump Lubrication System:

Wet Sump Lubrication System:

  • Wet sump lubrication system is used to supply the required lubricating oil to different parts of the engine to decrease the temperature of the engine parts.
  • Wet sump lubrication system is installed in the engine which is placed below the crankcase.
  • This type of method is used more than the dry sump type system.
  • The lubricating oil used to recirculate from the wet sump and stores the oil in sump after the lubrication process.
  • Installation cost is less.
  • It is less complex to design.
  • This type of system is used for low-speed vehicles compared to the dry sump system.
  • This type of lubrication process is used for less weight vehicles.

Dry Sump Lubrication System:

  • Dry sump lubrication system is used to supply the required lubrication oil to the engine parts.
  • A dry sump lubrication system is placed out of the engine.
  • The lubricating oil gets recirculated by entering into the dry sump.
  • This oil is filtered for any impurities.
  • This type of system is used in heavy weight vehicles.
  • Installation cost is more.
  • This type of process is a complex design.
  • This is used for high speed vehicles.
  • This type of system is used in limited vehicles.
