  • The working of a horizontal and vertical pump is similar, but when it comes to the placement of the shaft, the horizontal pump has the shaft placed horizontally and in a vertical pump shaft is placed vertically.
  • Mechanical pumps are classified into horizontal and vertical pumps depending on the requirement of the flow of fluid through the pump. Horizontal pumps move fluids in one direction (i.e., from top to bottom) while vertical pumps move fluids in other directions (i.e., from bottom to top).
  • A vertical pump occupies less space and A horizontal pump occupies large space.
  • The maintenance of a vertical pump is difficult than a horizontal pump.
  • Installation of a vertical pump is easy than the horizontal pump.
  • The horizontal pump is more smother than the vertical pump.
  • The horizontal pump is placed in a vertical direction and a vertical pump is superimposed from bottom to top.



  • A horizontal pump is easy to connect with the engine or to the motor.
  • A Vertical pump is more efficient at high pressure and high-temperature fluids.
  • A Vertical pump is used where there is no backward flow is required.
  • Horizontal pumps are used at heavy flow is required.
  • Horizontal pumps are easy to the axis for inspection, maintenance, repairs, etc than the vertical pump.
  • A  Horizontal pump works by using centrifugal force instead of having it go against gravity. It has no moving parts so there are fewer things that can break down over time.
  • Vertical pumps include both positive displacement and displacement-type pumps; negative displacement pumps are generally used only for low-pressure applications such as water pumping and sewage treatment systems, while positive displacement pumps are more commonly used for high-pressure applications like hydraulic lifts, elevators, and aircraft engines.
