Cast Iron and different types of effecting properties on Cast Iron

Cast Iron is made from Iron and carbon Alloy, In general, Cast iron contains 2.5% to 4% carbon.

Cast Iron has low ductility and poor Malleability.

Using raw materials cost to manufacture cast iron is cheap.

There are different types of cast irons like.

  • White cast iron.
  • Malleable cast iron.
  • Gray cast iron.
  • White cast iron.
  • Nodular cast iron.

Factors Affecting the Cast iron:

CORBON:

  • There is among 2% to 6% of Carbon present in cast iron. If the carbon content increases in it, this leads to Graphitization. This helps to form Gray cast iron.
  • If the carbon content is less then it cast iron may solidify to White cast iron.

Sulphur:

  • In Cast Iron, the amount of sulphur contains about 0.06% to 0.12%. when sulphur is added to iron this leads to form iron sulphide (FeS).
  • In this adding of sulphur gives to form Manganese sulphide (MnS) Due to the manganese affinity is more for sulphur than iron.
  • If there is only a high amount of Manganese sulphur is present then the effect of sulphur on cast iron is observed.

MANGANESE:

  • About 0.5% to 1% of manganese is added to cast iron. the main purpose of this is to reduce the brittleness of cast iron because of Sulphide formation.

PHOSPHORUS:

  • The addition gives Brittleness and decreases in toughness. the amount of Phosphorus added to cast iron should be careful, a small amount of this may lead to a large amount of Steatite.

SILICON:

  • The amount of silicon depends on the Graphitization. If there is less amount of silicon then it forms white cast iron and if there is more silicon content it forms to
  • Gray cast iron.
