Difference between LPG and CNG?

  1. LPG is the most common form of fuel used in vehicles. It is known as liquefied petroleum gas or just LPG for short. CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas and it is another type of fuel used in vehicles.
  2. LPG is liquefied petroleum gas. It is a mixture of propane and butane, which are liquefied in order to reduce their volume. It has less sulfur content than CNG. CNG is compressed natural gas that comes from the underground through pipes.
  3. LPG does not have any sulfur content while CNG does.
  4. LPG has a lower energy density than CNG.
  5. CNG is clean and does not pollute the atmosphere. LPG uses toxic substances like benzene and toluene which are found in crude oil or gas extracted from coal mines. They are carcinogenic, cause birth defects and affect the immune system of human beings adversely.
  6. LPG has a higher energy density than CNG.
  7. LPG uses less space and doesn’t require any infrastructure changes when compared to CNG.
  8. LPG gives better fuel economy and fewer maintenance costs compared to vehicles using CNG.
  9. CNG however does not produce much smoke but emits lower levels of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide which make it better than LPG.
