Laser beam welding – Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages and Disadvantages of Laser beam welding?

Laser beam welding is a method of joining metals that uses laser light as the heat source. This process is considered to be more efficient than traditional methods like gas metal arc welding and resistance spot welding.

Advantages of Laser beam welding:

  1. It can produce joints that are very strong,
  2. It can produce joints that are much smaller than would be possible using other methods and can produce joints at a very high speed.
  3. it can be used for any type of metal, including stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, and other types of metals.
  4. In this process is that the two metals are joined together without any distortion or change in their physical properties.
  5. There are no fumes or smoke released during the process as there is no heat used.
  6. It is more precise than any other method, it can be used to join metals with different types of finishes, the joining surfaces need not be flat and smooth.
  7. It does not require much time to weld the metals than other types.
  8. The smaller the gap between two pieces of metal, the higher the efficiency rate.
  9. There are no thermal stresses involved in this process, making it less prone to failure compared to other forms of joining metals together.
  10. Laser beam welders do not require spaces between pieces because they heat up both parts simultaneously making it possible for fast joining without much wastage since there is no waiting time required for cooling down after joining two parts

Disadvantages of Laser beam welding:

  1. A special focusing lens is required to focus the laser on the workpiece being welded so that it melts only at that spot and not elsewhere.
  2. This method includes the high cost of laser beams.
  3. Soft metals cannot be welded.
  4. Due to its extreme precision and tight tolerances, this method requires a large amount of time and effort during production processes.
  5. It should be maintained properly.
  6. You need to wear special goggles to protect your eyes.
