What is Chain Drive?

Different Types of Chain Drives:

There are three different types of Chain Drives, they are as follows:

  • Hoisting and Hauling chain drive 
  • Conveyor Chain Drive
  • Power-transmitting Chain Drive

Hoisting and hauling chain drive:

  • The hoisting and hauling chain drive is a type of power transmission system that uses chains and sprockets to transmit power from the motor to the load. This type of drive is used extensively in material handling applications, such as cranes and elevators, where high power transmission and reliability are required.
  • The hoisting and hauling chain drive consists of an endless closed loop are driven sprocket and idler chain that is routed around several rollers. The driven sprocket can be either a roller or a tooth, but it must match the pitch of the chain. Most often, this type of system will utilize a timing belt rather than V-belts to transfer power between the motor and the load.

Advantages of Conveyor Chain Drive:

Disadvantages of Conveyor Chain Drive:

Power Transmitting Chain Drive:

A power transmitting chain drive is a type of mechanical transmission that uses chains and sprockets to transmit power from one shaft to another. It is a versatile transmission system that can be used in a variety of applications, including machinery, vehicles, and wind turbines.

Working of a Power Transmitting Chain Drive:

A power transmitting chain drive consists of two sprockets, called a driving sprocket and a driven sprocket. The driving sprocket is attached to the power source, while the driven sprocket is attached to the load. A chain is wrapped around the two sprockets, and metal teeth on the sprockets engage with the links in the chain to transmit power.

Benefits of power transmission chain drive?

Power transmitting chain drives are further classified into three types:

  • Block or bush chain
  • Bush roller chain
  • Silent Chain

Block or bush chains, Bush roller chains, and silent Chains all are different types of chains used in Power Transmission. 

Block or bush chain:

  • A block or bush chain is a kind of power transmission chain that uses the changing link block to change direction. 
  • Block or bush chain has nylon bushes on both sides of connecting links for bearing purposes. 
  • Block or bush chain doesn’t have a pitch circle, so the size of the block or bush chain is decided by the size of its connecting links.

  • Block or bush chain can be used as transmitting power at a constant speed and as oscillating to-and-fro motion for cranes, excavators, etc.
  • Block or bush chains consist of a series of metal plates called blocks mounted on a roller chain that is covered by another series of metal plates called bushes (or sleeves, in the case of silent chain). 

Block or bush chains are two types open or closed:

  • Open block or bush chains have removable pins that allow the chain to be disassembled for maintenance. 
  • Closed block or bush chains have pins that are permanently welded to the blocks and bushes. 

Bush Roller Chain:

  • Bush roller chain is a kind of transmission chain that uses pins and rollers to convey power.
  • Bush roller chain has an integral bushing between every two adjacent pins, which greatly reduces wear on the shafts. 

Silent Chain:

Silent Chain doesn’t use any type of bushings or bearings. It is the most rigid kind of roller chain, but it has much more friction than the bush roller chain. 

Advantage and disadvantages of Chain Drives:

Chain drives are a very popular means of transferring power, They are used in almost every machine that has rotating parts. The biggest advantage of chain drives is their ability to transfer large amounts of energy with minimal friction and no slippage.

Advantages of Chain-drive:

  • Chain drive systems can be designed so they are almost perfectly efficient, with very low friction.
  • Chain drive systems are very reliable and low wear.
  • Most chains are made of metal which is relatively durable and has good strength-to-weight characteristics.
  • Chains are easily lubricated but do not require much maintenance(easy to maintain). 

Disadvantages of Chain-drive:

  • Chain drive can be quite noisy. 
  • Chains can cause them to break or slip.
  • They are more expensive than some other drive systems.
  • Chains require a certain minimum diameter, so they are not always suitable for use in small machines.
  • They can be dangerous if not properly guarded.
  • Chains are less efficient at high speeds, because of friction.
  • They are much more difficult to maintain than shaft-driven systems since chains do not have much slack and can jump off the sprockets if not properly tensioned.
  •  If a chain breaks, it can cause extensive damage to the machine.
  • They are heavier than some other drive systems.

Applications of chain drives:
