An engine immobilizer is an electronic security device that prevents a vehicle’s engine from starting unless the proper key or fob is present. The immobilizer works by disabling the engine control module (ECM) and preventing fuel from reaching the engine. This makes it much more difficult for someone to steal the vehicle since they would need the correct key or fob to start the engine.
